When to Schedule Your Senior Session?

My clients often ask me when is the best time to schedule their senior session.  The majority of my senior sessions take place outdoors so my season generally runs from May through early November.  This does not mean I don’t make exceptions (I have held sessions in December!) but that timeframe is a good place to start. There are positive things about each season which I discuss below.

Benefits of a Spring/Early Summer Session

Late spring and early summer are wonderful months for a session.   The weather is ideal in May and June.  Many spring flowers are still blooming, the temperature is perfect and there are not too many bugs to contend with.  For seniors who are nearing graduation or just graduated – the pressure is off and it is time to celebrate before beginning their next steps.  For juniors (rising seniors), it is nice to have a session to after completing what is normally a stressful junior year. It is also ideal to fit the session in before their summer plans, programs, jobs, college visits, applications and travel start.  One less thing to schedule!

Benefits of a Summer Session

It is hard to go wrong with a warm summer evening for a senior session.   The light can be exquisite.  I have captured some of the most beautiful sunsets during summer sessions.  Rising seniors are busy but have not entered their demanding fall schedules.   It is easier to schedule midweek sessions allowing for flexibility for the senior and for myself.  Many seniors tend to favor summer outfits for their sessions as well.  It is nice to enter senior year with photos you like for the yearbook, cards, etc.  The downside is dealing with bugs and high humidity.

Benefits of a Fall Session

The fall in Connecticut and New York is beautiful.  I love to incorporate the fall foliage into a senior’s session.  Some seniors prefer fall clothing for their sessions.  Early fall tends to have ideal weather with less humidity (and bugs) than the summer months.   Seniors do tend to have more stressful schedules in the fall but may also prefer to schedule their session at this time – especially if their summers were busy with other commitments or they were away.  It is more difficult to schedule mid-week sessions due to school and the early sunsets so most fall sessions will take place on weekend days.

The MOST important thing is to schedule your senior session EARLY so that you get the season and the date you want.  I schedule a limited number of senior sessions and make them very special so please reach out now if you are interested!  I already have sessions scheduled for this summer.  Whatever season you choose - I promise it will be special!
